Scene 3

HOPE
This is love? Why, that boy and girl hate each other. And the ballerina, and toy soldier – they, they killed them! Who is that guy in the box? Another toy for them to break. This reminds me of when I was growing up. My brother would rip the heads off my dolls….

WISDOM
(cuts her off) You do not see, do you?

HOPE
See? What do you mean? I … I saw.

WISDOM
And you did not hear.

HOPE
I… I heard music.

WISDOM
You must listen with your heart. Look with the eyes of you heart.

HOPE
You speak in riddles. I don’t understand. I want to talk to Wisdom.

WISDOM
Turn you ear to wisdom and apply your heart to understanding.

HOPE
I’m trying.

WISDOM
(sighs) I can see this is going to be harder than I thought. Let’s continue with something a little easier.

HOPE
But I want to see the rest of this story.

WISDOM
It is not time.

HOPE
You can’t leave me hanging like this.

WISDOM
Wisdom gives you patience. (Pause) Listen. Do you hear?

HOPE
Hear what?

WISDOM
Shhhh. Do you hear her?

HOPE
I can’t hear her!

WISDOM
Look. She is showing you another story.

HOPE
(looks) Where? I don’t see anything.

WISDOM
It takes place in Athens., many years ago.

HOPE
Athens?

WISDOM
Athens Greece. It’s a story of friendship and love. Love can cause people to make quick and thoughtless decisions.

HOPE
(she is still looking) I still don’t see anything.

WISDOM
A father always wants the best for his daughter. During this period it was common for a father to chose his daughter’s husband. Egeus loves his daughter Hermia. He has chosen a distinguished gentleman for her, named Demetrius. But Hermia has fallen in love with another man, named Lysander. Do you see them?

HOPE
Where?

WISDOM
Look hard. Hermia does not want what her father wants, and refuses to listen to him. Egeus has taken the matter to the King of the land, King Theseus.
